Apple Device Offboarding (iPhone and MacBook)

Overview

This runbook covers offboarding Apple devices (iPhone and MacBook) from company management.

Order matters:

1. Retire the device in Microsoft Intune.
2. Release the device from the organization in Apple Business Manager.

Access

1. Open Apple Business Manager in your browser.
2. URL placeholder: add the production Apple Business Manager URL.
3. Sign in with an account that can manage and release devices.
4. Role placeholder: document exact required ABM role for follow-up.
5. If access is missing, contact support@hvcapital.com.

Common Tasks

Offboard an iPhone or MacBook

1. Locate the device in Microsoft Intune and Apple Business Manager by serial number.
2. In Microsoft Intune, go to Devices > All devices.
3. Select the device, then select Retire.
4. Confirm the retire action in Intune if prompted.
5. In Apple Business Manager, select Devices in the sidebar.
6. Search for the device, then select it from the list.
7. Select the More button, then select Release from Organization.
8. Confirm the release action in Apple Business Manager.
9. Record the device serial and offboarding date in the ticket.

Troubleshooting

• If the release action is unavailable, verify ABM permissions for your account.
• If the device cannot be found, re-check serial number and search filters.
• If the device still appears managed after Retire, allow time for the Intune action to complete before continuing with follow-up checks.
• If unsure whether a release is final, pause and confirm with IT before continuing.
